A GIFT OF LOVE

A gently told story of loss and love from a child’s perspective, written by a former grade school teacher who served in Iraq, dedicated to the memory of members of the New York City Fire Department “and all who fell” on September 11, 2001.

....this children’s book by Dr. Claus, with its core message about the healing power of love, treats a difficult subject with great sensitivity, warmth and reassurance.

Written from a seven year old's perspective, this tender read encompasses a father and daughter's love for each other and how daily routine can turn in a second.

Her father, a NYC fireman, went to work one morning and ended up giving his life on September 11, 2001. He, like many others on that terrible day, became a hero by risking his life to save others.

Before his death, he promised his daughter that he would buy her a NY Yankees cap, and that promised was fulfilled with his gift of love.

Truthfully written, yet compassionate, this story will help children to understand and deal with the loss our country suffered on that day. .

No one who was alive on September 11,2001 will ever forget it. Each one knows where they were when they heard the terrible news of the attack on our country. No two stories are the same perhaps, yet something joined us as we become a nation united. How could we ever understand the many ways that this happening changed people's lives forever, but it did. This tender book will open the readers heart to one family's story on that day as they lived, loved, lost and found the essence of what life is all about.

We meet a little girl, surrounded by love, protected and cared for. A child who leaves her home in the morning content in the knowledge that all is well, only to return to find the harsh happening that has taken away her beloved father. Her dad, a Fireman, gave his life on that faithful day so others would live. Although that day he became a hero to many, in the heart of this family he already was. Told with truth, sprinkled with compassion, this book will remind all of us of the past, make us proud of those who gave their lives so others may live, and remind us of those left behind. It is not a book of fluff, but it is a book of true love, courage, and hope. Excellent job, highly recommended for young and old alike.

A GIFT OF LOVE(SEPTEMBER 11,2001) by Dr. Claus is a wonderful children's picture book with wonderful illustrations by Christopher Vassallo.. A Gift Of Love (Paperback)

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'tis the gift to come down where you ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight.' An old Shaker tune from 1848, but it must have been much of the influence that Dr. Claus (we are not told to whom that moniker belongs, nor does it matter) used in composing his extended poem story. A GIFT OF LOVE is just that - a gently warm story of how a child, surrounded by the love of a FDNY fireman and a mother, awakens one morning with evidence all around her of the safety of home only to go to school and upon writing in her journal the date September 11, 2001 she hears a boom and is escorted home where her mother finds a special way to share with the little girl that her father was a hero, saving lives during the Twin Towers calamity.

No, this is not a happy lighthearted little book, but it is one written with such tenderness and preparation for a child that no matter what the day brings she will always be surrounded and protected by love. Dr. Claus' book shares the illustrations of Christopher Vassallo who captures the same degree of warmth and reassurance that make this text, this book a true gift of love. Children need to be informed about matters such as this - matters that include death, tragedy, and heroism, and at present there are probably no better books to introduce these difficult topics than this well conceived and presented important book Grady Harp, July 11

A powerful and emotional story that is brilliantly understated, July 27, 2011    * * * * *

It is a demonstration of how traumatic the events of September 11, 2001 were in the United States when reading this book nearly ten years later can evoke such strong emotions.
The main character is a girl whose father is a firefighter in New York City. She gets up and eats her breakfast and prepares to go to school for her first day of second grade. Other than the first day of a new school year, the day is largely routine she plays a bit with her dad, putting on his firefighter's hat and she packs a snack for the day.
The planes hit the towers and her day becomes one of tension and insecurity, the school is dismissed and when she gets home there are many people in her living room gathered around a television set. Her mother has tears in her eyes and they sit together as she is told how brave her father is. At the end, the girl is holding a New York Yankees baseball cap, a gift from her father.
The power of this book is enhanced by the fact that there is no explicit statement as to what happened to the girl's father. This is an air of uncertainty that keeps you wondering and your emotions more on edge. Sometimes the best way to say things is to leave them unsaid and this is one of those times.

Everyone will remember what they were doing on 9/11. I know two special girls, one just starting second grade - like the girl in the book, who went to school on that morning. On that morning, they prayed for the innocent victims and heroes on that day. The poetry of this book reminded them, and will remind any reader, of an ordinary day that quickly turned into a day of shock and sadness. The story will also reinforce the memories from the weeks that followed when tales of heroism and love dominated the national news. The book may prompt a parent-child discussion of the events of 9/11. Grade school children will enjoy the story, and parents will be touched by this remembrance's expression of love, pride, gratitude, and loss.

-----Five starred review, from a loving parent

This book is sad, but it's heart warming. And I loved reading this book that is through a Child's eyes of the events on 9/11. I love this book and can't wait for my son to get home from school so we can read it together. September 11th will be forever burned into my heart for the simple fact that my son was born 6 days before the horrific events took place. May we all never forget the victims and the Heros of 9/11.

In a rhythm, rhyming way Dr. Claus shares with children his gift of writing.  In his book, A Gift of Love, Claus shares his compassion for those that sacrifice to help us in our everyday life.  A story about a firefighter and ground zero your child will learn the true meaning of love.  This book is very well written and so touching; what a way to honor the 10th anniversary.  This book will help to keep the event fresh in our minds as we go about our everyday life.  It is a winner of a book.    Posted by apple blossom, Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Thank you, Dr. Claus, for writing a story to help us parents discuss some difficult things with our children. It focuses on hope, not hatred or destruction, so it doesn't leave parent or child with feelings of fear or hopelessness.   Monica  Thursday, September 8, 2011
